# Install on Mac

Codemany is a Mac app. It runs your GitHub Actions jobs on the Mac it is installed on, in a background service that keeps running when the app is closed.

## What you need

- A Mac with Apple silicon on macOS 14 or later.
- A GitHub account that can add self-hosted runners to the repository or organization (repo admin, or org owner).

## Install

1. [Download Codemany](https://codemany.com/download). The DMG is signed and notarized by Apple.
2. Open it and drag Codemany to Applications.
3. Open Codemany. Setup walks you through the rest.

## Set up

1. Connect GitHub
Sign in, use your GitHub CLI login, or paste a token. See [Connect GitHub](https://codemany.com/docs/get-started/github).
2. Pick repos
Choose repositories, or a whole organization.
3. Start runners
Codemany registers a fresh runner for each job, sized to your Mac.
4. Change one line
   In a workflow, set `runs-on: [self-hosted, codemany]`. See [Your first runner](https://codemany.com/docs/get-started/first-runner).

It starts with a 14-day free trial for up to 2 machines, with no card. See [Licensing and seats](https://codemany.com/docs/account/billing).

## What runs in the background

- **A background service.** Jobs run in Codemany's background service, which keeps running when the app is closed, quits or updates. A headless Mac mini whose app is not running keeps working.
- **Runners sized to your Mac.** By default each runner budgets 4 GB of memory, 15 GB of disk and 2 performance cores, and 4 GB of memory plus 20 GB of disk stay reserved for macOS. That is 1 runner on an 8 GB Mac and 3 on a 16 GB one.
- **Keep-awake.** Codemany keeps your Mac awake while jobs run (or while runners are online, or never: your choice), and lets it sleep again 2 minutes after the last job.
- **Where to watch.** The app shows workflows, runs, jobs and live step logs. There is menu bar status, a desktop widget, and a LAN dashboard at `http://codemany.local:8825` that any browser on your network can open.

## Updates

Codemany updates itself. Installing an update never stops a running job: the background service restarts onto the new version only after running jobs finish. Release notes are on the [changelog](https://codemany.com/changelog).

## Uninstall

Cancel your subscription first, then stop the runners from Settings › Fleet › Stop & Uninstall. Every step, with the files to remove, is in the FAQ: [How do I uninstall it completely?](https://codemany.com/docs/reference/faq#uninstall)
