# FAQ

Short answers to common questions.

## Basics

### What runs where?

Everything that touches your code runs on your Mac or Linux machine. GitHub still schedules the jobs and shows the logs. Codemany's servers only handle licenses, the console, this website and downloads.

### Do I have to keep the app open?

No. Codemany's background service keeps running jobs when the app is closed.

### How many jobs run at once?

As many as your machine has room for: 1 on an 8 GB Mac, 3 on a 16 GB Mac. [Add machines](https://codemany.com/docs/machines) to run more.

### What do I change in my workflows?

One line: `runs-on: [self-hosted, codemany]`.

### What tools do jobs get?

Whatever is installed on your Mac; nothing is preinstalled. Codemany detects and checks your tools, and adds labels like `xcode-26.0` and `docker` that a job can ask for ([labels](https://codemany.com/docs/advanced#labels)).

## Your data and security

### What data leaves my Mac?

Your code, logs and GitHub token stay on your machine. Codemany receives your GitHub id, login and email when you start a trial, plus a daily license check and runner summaries for the console. Codemany sends anonymous usage stats: counts and sizes, never names, code or tokens. You can turn them off in Settings › This Mac. Full list: [Security & privacy](https://codemany.com/docs/security#leaves) and the [Privacy Policy](https://codemany.com/privacy).

### Is it safe?

A self-hosted runner is not a sandbox. Only run workflows you would run in your own terminal. Public repos are opt-in, per repo, and each job gets a fresh runner ([more](https://codemany.com/docs/security)).

### Can jobs run apart from my user account?

Jobs run as your user (`host` mode). Two experimental modes keep them apart: `user`, a separate user per runner, and `vm`, a fresh virtual machine per job ([Advanced](https://codemany.com/docs/advanced#isolation)).

## Setup

### What do I need?

A Mac with Apple silicon on macOS 14 or later, or 64-bit Linux with systemd. And a GitHub account that can add self-hosted runners (repo admin, or org owner).

### Does it run on Linux?

Yes. One command installs it on a server ([how](https://codemany.com/docs/machines#linux)). Jobs use `runs-on: [self-hosted, Linux, codemany]`.

### How do I open the dashboard from another device?

On the same network, open [codemany.com/open](https://codemany.com/open) or `http://codemany.local:8825`. Changes from another device need the admin token (`codemany admin-token`).

## Pricing and accounts

### How much does it cost?

$20/month includes 2 machines; each extra machine is $10/month. Start with a 14-day free trial, with no card. Buy in the app after signing in with GitHub ([Billing](https://codemany.com/docs/billing)).

### What happens when the trial ends?

New runners stop until you subscribe. Running jobs finish. A license keeps working for 7 days offline.

### Who needs a subscription?

The GitHub account or organization that owns the repos. Personal and organization repos need one each.

### Can it run jobs for an organization?

Yes, if the organization has its own subscription. An admin subscribes; then any member can add a machine.

### How do I add, remove or move a machine?

In the app, open Settings › Machines & billing. To move to a new Mac, remove the old one, then add the new one.

## Uninstall and help

### How do I uninstall it completely?

First cancel your subscription; uninstalling does not cancel it. Then choose Settings › Troubleshooting › Background service › … › Stop & Uninstall, and move Codemany to the Trash. To remove every file and Keychain item, run:

```
rm -rf ~/.codemany ~/Library/Application\ Support/Codemany \
  ~/Library/Application\ Support/com.codemany.app ~/Library/Caches/com.codemany.app
rm -f ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.codemany.daemon.plist  # only from 0.2 or older
defaults delete com.codemany.app
security delete-generic-password -s com.codemany.vault        # GitHub token
security delete-generic-password -s com.codemany.app.license  # license, if present
```

On GitHub, remove "Codemany" under Settings › Applications, and delete leftover offline runners under the repo's Settings › Actions › Runners.

### How do I get help?

Choose **Send Feedback…** in the Codemany menu, or message [@arpwal on X](https://x.com/arpwal). Common fixes: [Troubleshooting](https://codemany.com/docs/troubleshooting).
